The Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Adolf Mkenda, has said that the Government continues to put emphasis on strengthening education, skills, science, technology, and innovation in order to enable Tanzanians to create a nation with skilled huma capital able to solve various challenges and reduce dependence on technology and experts from outside the country.

Speaking on August 18, 2026, during the launch of the Education, Skills and Innovation Week 2026, Prof. Mkenda said that the Government aims to increase Tanzanians’ capacity to design and use modern technologies—particularly in areas of science and technology—to ensure the nation has capable professionals who can develop solutions that meet local needs.

He stated that dependence on imported products, technologies, and expertise is a challenge that should be addressed through greater investment in education, research, and innovation. According to Prof. Mkenda, Tanzania has highly capable experts who should be given the right environment and opportunities to apply their knowledge in developing products and services for the development of the country.

He further said that the Government has continued to invest in educational institutions that provide training in science, technology, and various skills, while also creating conducive learning and teaching environments. This move is intended to increase the number of skilled professionals required to build a modern, knowledge-based economy.

Prof. Mkenda also said that the Government continues to strengthen research and innovation in order to find answers to various challenges facing the nation, including in areas such as production, health, agriculture, the environment, and the application of technology. He said that studies conducted should produce results that can be used directly to improve the lives of citizens.

He added that progress in science and technology should go hand in hand with environmental conservation, so that production and technology use do not create harm for the current and future generations. Therefore, he emphasized the importance of professionals and researchers designing environmentally friendly technologies that can be used sustainably.

In addition, Prof. Mkenda said that the Government is also looking at the best ways to adopt new technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), in the education sector and other areas of development. He stated that proper use of such technologies can increase efficiency in teaching, learning, research, and the production of knowledge.

He called on educational institutions, researchers, innovators, youth, and other stakeholders to work together with the Government to build a self-reliant nation through education, skills, science, technology, and innovation. He stressed that such collaboration is essential to ensure Tanzania produces professionals, products, and technologies that can compete both within and outside the country.
