Information on TRCs

The Ministry of Education and Culture issued a circular on teachers’ professional development through Teachers’ Resource Centres (TRCs) in 1986. Since then there have been many attempts to initiate and establish TRCs. The combined efforts involved MOEC, NGOs, individuals and religious organisations. Despite the cost effective approach to INSET delivery, it was until the 1990’s when TRCs emerged strongly.

The overall aim of TRCs is to support teachers to enhance their skills both academically and professionally and thereby improve the quality of education in schools in Tanzania .

The following are the objectives of establishing and running TRCs:

  • Teachers’ understanding and implementation of subject related issues improved, both in relation to content and methodology;
  • Enhanced capacity for preparing and making use of teaching aids among teachers;
  • Opportunities provided for teachers and others concerned with education to share ideas;
  • Teachers assisted to upgrade themselves, both academically and professionally; and
  • Facilities provided for community development discussion and activities.

An important function of the TRC is to serve the whole community as a community development centre.
