  • Tutors Education Programme (TEP)

TEP started as a project funded by Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) from 1997 and ended in 2002 when it was mainstreamed and become part of the Primary Education Development Plan (PEDP) as part of quality improvement. The Teacher Education Department co-ordinated the programme while Stockholm Institute of Education (SIE) provided consultancy service on the aspect of monitoring the quality and accreditation of the course at degree level.

The TEP started in 1998 as a residential programme taking three months. Tutors were to go to Morogoro TC and each intake had an average of 20 participants. From 1998 when when the programme started to 2003, Morogoro TC organised ten intakes and only 265 (i.e. 28%) tutors attended the course. Since the programme is considered important to teacher educators, and in order to allow more tutors to attend the course while working at their respective TCs, the MOEC decided to use the distance mode of delivery, which was pilot tested in the Northern zone. Expansion of the programme has been done to three zones (Southern, Eastern and Central).

Currently the course has been stopped waiting for signing of memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Education and Culture (MOEC) and the Open University of Tanzania (OUT).

(a) Course objectives

To improve the quality of tutors and indirectly improve the quality of primary and secondary school teachers.

(b) Eligibility / target group

All Teachers Colleges tutors are eligible to attend training through this programme.
