Objective
To accredit schools according to laid down policies, plans, programmes, standards, rules, regulations and other applicable basic and secondary education instruments.
Functions
- To initiate and develop guidelines, standards and other instruments on minimum requirements for establishment of schools or education centres
- To cause any proposed school or centre to be inspected to verify if it meets minimum standards;
- To scrutinize applications for the nature of the ownership and establishment of schools or centres;
- To prepare and issue certificates of registration of eligible schools or centres;
- To maintain and up-date a register of all schools, centres and teachers;
- To deregister schools, centres or teachers which have failed to keep up to the requisite standards of a quality; and
- To prepare and submit periodic reports to the Commissioner of Education.
This Division is led by a Director and comprises three sections as follow:
- Government School Quality Assurance Section;
- Non – Government School Quality Assurance Section; and
- Physical Facilities Standards Section.
Government Schools Accreditation Section
The Section performs the following activities:
- Initiate and develop guidelines, standards and other instruments on minimum requirements for establishment registration of Government schools or education centres
- Cause any proposed Government school or centre to be inspected to verify if it meets minimum standards and requirements for establishment and registration;
- Scrutinize applications for ownership and establishment of Government schools or centres and recommend accordingly;
- Prepare, analyse and upload data to the ESMIS and Open Government Partnership portal related to the Section in accordance with the agreed work flow and protocol;
- Maintain an up to date a register of Government schools, centres and teachers;
- Prepare, develop and implement long, medium and annual plans for Government schools or centres verification and compliance check;
- Advise Government schools and centres on different matters and best practices;
- Deregister a Government school or centre which has failed to take remedial measures; and
- Prepare and submit periodic reports as required.
This Section is led by an Assistant Director.
Non-Government Schools Accreditation Section
The Section performs the following activities:-
- Initiate and develop guidelines, standards and other instruments on minimum requirements for establishment registration of Non-Government schools or education centres
- Cause any proposed Non-Government school or centre to be inspected to verify if it meets minimum standards and requirements for establishment and registration;
- Prepare, analyse and upload data to the ESMIS and Open Government Partnership portal related to the Section in accordance with the agreed work flow and protocol;
- Scrutinize applications for ownership and establishment of a Non-Government school or centre and recommend accordingly;
- Maintain an up to date a register of Non-Government schools, centres and teachers;
- Prepare, develop and implement long, medium and annual plans for Non-Government schools and centres verification and compliance check;
- Advise Non-Government schools and centres on different matters and best practices;
- Deregister a Non-Government school or centre which has failed to take remedial measures; and
- Prepare and submit periodic reports as required.
This Section is led by an Assistant Director.
Physical Facilities Standards Section
This Section performs the following activities:-
- Initiate, develop and submit to the Commissioner of Education minimum standards and specifications for buildings, furniture and equipment;
- Initiate develop and submit to the Commissioner of Education standards plans for rehabilitation and preventive maintenance and environmental protection for education facilities;
- Prepare, analyse and upload data to the ESMIS and Open Government Partnership portal related to the Section in accordance with the agreed work flow and protocol;
- Prepare minimum standard architectural and engineering designs for pre-primary, primary, secondary, special, teacher and adult and non-formal education facilities;
- Provide professional advice to consultants, investors on appropriate standards for construction of pre-primary, primary, secondary, special, teacher and adult and non-formal education facilities; and
- Prepare and submit periodic reports as required from time to time.
